Pushyamitra Shunga, the saviour of India :

The Maurya Empire weakened towards the end of Ashoka’s reign and during that of his successors. Indo-Greek Kingdoms to the North West of India under kings like Demetrius and Menander attacked India. They pushed through Punjab and Mathura to attack Saket and Pataliputra. The timid Mauryan emperor Brihadratha showed no signs of resistance. His army commander Pushyamitra took matters in hand, killed him in an army parade and restored the army morale. He counter-attacked the Indo-Greeks, expelled them from Pataliputra, and forced his way to Punjab restoring Indian rule up to North West. He also performed two Ashwamedha Yagyas. Pushyamitra was the founder of the Shunga dynasty.
